RANDALL, WALTER C., DONALD V. PRIOLA, AND RICHARD H. ULMER. A functional study of distribution of cardiac sympathetic nerves. Am. J. Physiol. 205(6): 1227-1231. I g63.-In dogs with unilaterally sympathectomized hearts, the remaining intact stellate ganglion was electrically stimulated I 4-58 days following sympathectomy. Pressures were simultaneously recorded from all four chambers of the heart and the resulting responses compared with those observed in similarly stimulated but nonsympathectomized animals. Augmentor responses were markedly decreased in some animals but relatively unchanged in others, and it is evident that considerable variation exists in the distribution of sympathetic fibers in different animals. A common finding was markedly delayed augmentation in which responses were practically absent during the initial periods of stimulation. Chronotropic responses appeared to be largely depengent upon intact connections via the right sympathetic nerves. It may be concluded that the sympathetic cardiac nerves from the right side go primarily to the atria and nodal tissue, with a variable supply to the ventricles. In some animals the latter supply is very large while in others it is minimal. The left sympathetic cardiac nerves furnish the major supply to the ventricles, with variable but generally lesser distribution to the atria.

Positional Relationship between Natural Killer Cells and Distribution of Sympathetic Nerves in Decidualized Mouse Uterus
Background: Uterine natural killer (uNK) cells are the most abundant leukocytes in pre-implantation endometrium and early pregnancy deciduas in humans and rodents. They are associated with structural changes in maternal spiral arteries but regulation of their re-cruitment and activation is incompletely understood. The major subpopulation of uNK cells in humans expresses CD56, the neural cell ad...
متن کاملCardiac sympathetic rejuvenation: a link between nerve function and cardiac hypertrophy.
Neuronal function and innervation density is regulated by target organ-derived neurotrophic factors. Although cardiac hypertrophy drastically alternates the expression of various growth factors such as endothelin-1, angiotensin II, and leukemia inhibitory factor, little is known about nerve growth factor expression and its effect on the cardiac sympathetic nerves. This study investigated the im...
متن کاملEffect of Diphenylhydantoin and Lidoca1ne on Cardiac Arrhythmias Induced by Hypothalamic Stimulation
The importance of the central nervous system in the antiarrhythmic actions of diphenyhiydantoin and lidocaine was studied using arrhythmias induced by electrical stimulation of the posterior hypothalamus in cats. Hypothalamic stimulation resulted in cardiac arrhythmias mediated by the sympathetic nervous system. The arrhythmias occurred during stimulation, and recordings from cardiac sympatheti...
متن کاملCardiac autonomic nerve distribution and arrhythmia☆
OBJECTIVE To analyze the distribution characteristics of cardiac autonomic nerves and to explore the correlation between cardiac autonomic nerve distribution and arrhythmia. DATA RETRIEVAL A computer-based retrieval was performed for papers examining the distribution of cardiac autonomic nerves, using heart, autonomic nerve, sympathetic nerve, vagus nerve, nerve distribution, rhythm and atria...
متن کاملAttenuation of long-lasting effects of sympathetic stimulation after repeated stimulation.
Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is stored with norepinephrine in sympathetic nerves throughout the cardiovascular system and is released during activation of the sympathetic nervous system in humans and other animals. After stimulation of the cardiac sympathetic nerves in anesthetized dogs, the action of the vagus nerve on heart rate is attenuated for a prolonged period. This attenuation of cardiac vagal ...
